Clear cut glass square inkwell,
3" square x 4-1/8" tall, cased in ruby glass and cut-to-clear
in a cane pattern variant. Matching round top with a star cut pattern
on top of lid, and matching star on base of inkwell. European, c.
1860-1870. This type of large glass piece would have a clear glass
insert to hold a suitable amount of ink. In contrast to flashed ruby
glass, this cased glass example is a much thicker layer of ruby glass,
applied in the glass-forming process over the original clear base,
and then cut through to the clear base. |
